BABE #34: AMY PHILLIPS,<BR>Marketing & Exec. Support @ NDC Construction Co.
Chelsea DuDeVoire
Amy is undoubtedly a #girlboss. Referred to me by the lovely Sadie Montanus (Babe #7), she is a hardworking lady who devotes so much of her time to the progress and growth of the city where I grew up. As the "Jill of All Trades" at NDC Construction Company, she handles everything from marketing and advertising to office management while somehow balancing several community organizations and board positions. She's also a lover of music and has the voice of an angel, and is in the process of opening up her own coffee shop while also running a women's group! And the list goes on.
The Basics:
Hometown: Fostoria, Ohio Current location: Bradenton, Florida Alma mater: University of South Florida Degree: B.S. in Business Administration, B.S. in Marketing Hustle: Marketing & Executive Support @ NDC Construction Co.
The Favorites:
Babe you admire and why? Jackie O. She represents poise and grace, and was one of the first ladies to introduce style to the White House.
Go-to adult beverage? Cabernet sauvignon, or a vodka soda with lots of lime.
If you could have coffee with anyone in the world, who would it be? Probably Amy Poehler or Anna Kendrick. They're both so funny and talented, and have taken awesome advantage of the platforms they've been given in order to stand up for current events.
What’s one thing you wish you knew more about? Psychology; our make-up and how our brains are wired. I think if we understood this a little better, we might better understand and support each other in general.
The Hustle:
Tell us about your hustle: I work for a large design-build firm in Bradenton, FL and wear many hats, with marketing being at the forefront. This part of my job has given me a strong involvement with my local community, and the ability to dip my toes into all sectors of non-profits and organizations. Currently, my main hustle is being a city activist with a focus on getting people (primarily my peers and millennials) involved. I'm also in the process of co-founding a coffee shop called Ollie's Yard in our local arts district, Village of the Arts. We are currently getting through all of the renovations and repairs for closing!
What does your typical workday look like? Each day is different and starts with checking email, grabbing coffee, and making sure there are no immediate fires to put out in the office. From there, I start knocking out my to-do list with whatever is most pressing. I handle marketing, advertising, proposals and sponsorship, as well as everything office-management related from data entry and running errands to attending events.
What is your community involvement like? I am on the Board of Directors for PACE Center for Girls Manatee, a member of multiple non-profit event chairs and committees, and I volunteer with Manatee Young Professionals, Realize Bradenton, and anything else I have time for that will grow my community. I like to think that I am bringing about and/or influencing positive change whether through support of local grassroots initiatives or small businesses-hosted events in the area. I also lead a women’s group called Propel, which is all about supporting and encouraging other awesome women in the community.
What motivates you every day? Results. If I can make a difference in someone’s life through my achievements, they're a win. I am totally a results-driven individual, so not seeing things happen doesn't work for me.
Favorite part about your jobs? Being the face of the company and getting to attend all of the events that we sponsor. My boss is very active in the community and as a result, we get to support a lot of really great organizations. It feels good to work for a company that gives back so much. That’s where my role will come in handy at my coffee shop - having this background and experience in marketing and community relations.
How do you manage stress? Music, prayer, and me-time. I know that if I am constantly stressing out or wound too tight, that even though it's tough - taking time for me is essential. Being out in nature also helps bring perspective to how small I really am, what's really going on, and how small my problems really are.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the workplace, and how’d you overcome it? Time management of others' schedules when I need to meet a deadline for a proposal or project. The best way to handle this issue is through regularly communicating with my team. I now know to speak up and stay organized with everyone's schedules, so collaborative projects get done a lot more smoothly.
What does success look like to you? Success to me is hard to define and varies for each person. I would say for me, it's a positive work-life balance, to be financially responsible, and to be on my way to building wealth so that I can give back. That’s where my heart truly lies.
What do you hope for your future? To continue to learn and grow in the current positions and seasons of life I am in so that I can continue to make a change in the community/region on an even greater scale.
Career and/or life advice for other Babes? If you are going to put your name on it, make it worth it and bring about positive change. Otherwise, what's the point?
