BABE #17: DAKOTA BARBER, <BR>Social Media Coordinator @ Nested Naturals
Chelsea DuDeVoire
I'm just going to come out and say it: Dakota is totally my girl crush. I don't even know her personally and she lives approximately 4,460km away from me (not that I checked,) but she's kind of my jam. Her outlook on life is so refreshing, + her creative, lighthearted spirit is so genuine. She's also a lady who knows what she wants (and doesn't want) and is doing something about it. Can you tell I'm a big fan of this Canadian babe? I think you will be, too. Thanks for being here, Dakota!

How do you spend your free time? I’m a total homebody. I recently heard the term “anti-socialite” and was like... that’s me. I love spending time with my boyfriend, going for long walks to the ocean, drinking enormous amounts of coffee, wine tasting, blogging, thrift shopping, staging Instagram photos and dreaming up new projects.
Must-have item in your purse? My phone, if it’s not in my hand.
First concert: Gwen Stefani! #BabesWhoHustle
The Hustle:
Tell us about your current hustle: I am currently working as a Social Media Coordinator for a startup health and wellness company called Nested Naturals. In addition to my 9-5, I am a freelance writer for several magazines, and I run a blog called State & Occupation. I also work part time as a Content Coordinator for Best Version Media.
What does your typical workday look like? Every morning, we have a 15-minute group mediation, followed by a meeting, and then 20 minutes of reading time to get through whatever personal development book we’re working on. Then I bust open my coffee and hop on social media! I have total creative freedom with our company, and spend my days staging and taking photos, writing blog posts, crafting and curating content and engaging with customers. I also started a program here for guest blog contributors and will be heading our brand ambassador program that is launching in the next couple of months. It's been so much fun working with a young team that values health, honesty, and champagne Fridays.
Do you have any community involvement? I'm wildly passionate about animal rights. I ran an ongoing mini series last year featuring local and influential vegetarians/vegans in a Q&A-style format to encourage others to take up a meat-free lifestyle.
What motivates you every day? It’s so important to me that the people I love are proud of me. Waking up every day to put the work in and create beautiful, interesting things is one of the ways I know I can accomplish that.
Favorite part about your job? The honesty and transparency the company stands for, the amazing and powerful tiny team, and our shared desire to succeed and have a lot of fun while doing it. As far as the work itself, my absolute favourite part is staging and photographing our products.
What do you hope for your future? To be in demand. I love feeling like I am the best person for the job!
Any advice for other women? 1. Create your own opportunities. I studied Television and Radio Broadcasting and realized that reporting the news was NOT what I wanted to do. What I did know is that I love to write, so I started a blog as a creative outlet, and doing so led me to landing my first job in communications! 2. Look for the humour and beauty in all things.
