Building Your Community While Stuck at Home

How to network with hustling babes while still socially distancing
By Mandy Shold

For the last 130+ days, I’ve been social distancing, self-isolating and essentially quarantining with my boyfriend and his two male roommates.

Don’t get me wrong—I love the lot of ‘em. I love our craft beer tastings, our movie Mondays and our attempts at learning how to barbecue. But I also love the female friendships in my life. And, not to brag, but I have some pretty badass female friends—the kind that aren’t afraid to start their own business or move to a new state all by themselves.

And over the past three months, it’s not the pilates classes or public pools I’ve missed most—it’s real, raw face time with that inspiring group of women. I’ve missed building each other up, celebrating our triumphs and, truthfully, having them bring out the best in me.

It took 100+ days for me to realize just what I was missing most during my isolation—it was my fellow babes who hustle.

So here I am writing on the most appropriate of platforms to share some creative ways I’ve connected with women virtually, and how you, too, can create a community of strong like-minded women—all from your living room.

(1) Join a Book Club

If you’re like me, you’ve never had more time on your hands to sit down and read. So why not take the time to soak up some knowledge (and maybe even some sunshine), and then converse about it with fellow bookworms? From themed groups to our own Babes + Books, there are plenty of virtual book clubs available out there. And if nothing seems just right, start your own! Just remember, the more diverse perspectives, the better, so be sure to have your friends invite a few ladies from outside your inner circle to join in on the fun.

(2) Attend a Class

Getting a little stir crazy? A new hobby is just what you need to add a bit of spice to your routine and help you make new friends. From painting workshops to cooking classes, there are tons of inspiring virtual classes at your fingertips. Feel free to invite some casual acquaintances, or fly solo and make some new friends. Looking for something a little more professional? There are plenty of online universities or platforms also offering discounted classes. Why not beef up your resume and your LinkedIn connections all in one go?

(3) Find a Workout Routine

While I miss going to the gym, I’ve spent this time learning to embrace my new at-home workout regime. There are thousands of influencers doing free live workouts, countless digital or in-app workout programs, and plenty of fitness studios offering virtual classes. The most difficult thing is to know where to start. I’d suggest mapping your week in workouts (IG Live and Zoom are great for chatting with fellow participants,) or, if you need a bit more routine like me, try a new program like Tone It Up: a female-focused organization with a huge community online that you can connect with. As if you needed another reason to only wear leggings or bike shorts!

(4) Look Local

Be on the lookout for local museums, bars or even associations that are offering fun virtual events. Many of your favorite places that may not be open yet are trying their hand at online events, panels, Q&As, tastings, you name it! Not only will this help you support your local businesses, but you could even meet a new friend who’s nearby. For example, you could join a local brewery for a live tasting, and meet someone new to grab a beer with once things calm down

(5) Get Social.

On social media, that is! Rather than mindlessly scrolling, follow accounts that challenge you and dig in on the comments. Accounts like @BabesWhoHustle, @CreateCultivate and @TheEveryGirl are great jumping off points, but be sure to follow other badass babes who bring out the best in you. And what’s most important: reach out! Apps like Instagram and LinkedIn may get a bad rap for random messages, but go ahead and slide into someone’s DMs and tell them how inspiring they are. I promise, they’ll be touched by your genuine admiration.

As you reach out and build your community, be sure not to neglect your existing gal pals! Schedule virtual coffee chats or host a driveway happy hour—because chances are, they’re feeling just as isolated as you are. Spend time every week to reach out, check in on your community, and show them your support while socially distanced.

Just remember, we are stronger together—even if that’s still six feet apart!
